The CycleMaster

NOTICE: Radio Adventures is currently in the process of moving its manufacturing facilities to a new location.  Therefore we are not able to accept new orders until probably late October.  We appreciate your interest in our products and apologize for any inconvenience.

Introduction

Several years ago at Radio Adventures we began to develop the idea of a frequency-locked loop capable of controlling voltage tuned oscillators in a wide variety of applications. Essentially, the control loop works as follows: The output voltage of a balanced integrator is applied to the control voltage input of a voltage tuned oscillator. The frequency of the oscillator is then measured and compared to a target frequency. This target frequency is selectable from memory or a rotary encoder. Correction pulses are applied to the integrator based on the difference between the measured frequency and the target frequency. These pulses steer the control voltage up or down, the magnitude of the change in the control voltage being determined by a selectable RC time constant. Unlike many "huff and puff" controllers that only stabilize the oscillator over a very narrow bandwidth, the CycleMaster can measure and correct from 0 to 50 MHz, providing continous analog tuning with digital memory, VFOs, and more! At the heart of the CycleMaster control loop lies the C7 Frequency Controller Chip. Three board kits, designed to utilize the features of the C7 in a complete frequency control system, the CycleMaster, are detailed below.

BK- 178 The Display Board Kit

The four digit display with key matrix board kit, model BK-178, is specifically designed to interface with the frequency controller main board kit, model BK-179. However, this kit could also be used in other applications as a general purpose four digit display with partial keypad. For applications other than direct interface with the frequency controller main board kit, please contact our engineering department. This assembly provides the digital frequency readout as well as the push button functions of the CycleMaster.

BK- 179 The Main Board Kit

The main control circuit board kit, model BK179, is useful for evaluating the features of the RAC C7 programmable frequency controller chip, incorperating digital features into home built or commercial radios, stabilizing analog function generators, or interfacing with existing voltage tuned rigs to provide a digital "home station". This kit comes complete with unterminated six inch cables for easy hook up. The matching display and integrator board kits plug right in to existing headers. This board implements the control logic, the frequency counter, and the memory as well as interfaces for the shaft encoder, four digit display/keypad, keying/control, and integrator of the CycleMaster.

BK-180 The Integrator Board Kit

The integrator board kit, model BK-180, is specifically designed to interface with the frequency controller main board kit, model BK-179. However, this kit could also be used in other applications as a general purpose integrator. For applications other than direct interface with the frequency controller board kit, please contact our engineering department. This assembly implements the balanced integrator with offset voltage switching (RIT) of the CycleMaster.
