C5 CMOS Frequency Counter Chip
NOTICE: Radio Adventures is currently in the process of moving its manufacturing facilities to a new location. Therefore we are not able to accept new orders until probably late October. We appreciate your interest in our products and apologize for any inconvenience. Introduction
The C5 combines various frequency counting features in a 28 pin DIP package. The C5 along with a standard 74HC02 gate and three low cost driver transistors drives a 6 digit seven segment LED display to 100 hz resolution. The C5 covers the frequency range from DC to over 50 Mhz and the update rate is approximately 40 times per second making the display update appear almost instantaneous. The C5 is useful in the construction of general purpose frequency counters and in frequency displays for commercial and home built communications equipment and classic tube type radios.
Features
- DC to 50 Mhz frequency range.
- Drives six digit common cathode LED display to 100 hz resolution.
- Approximately 40 updates per second providing nearly real time tuning response. No noticeable "rubber band" effect.
- Reduction of "last digit jitter" effect.
- Leading zero blanking of "Mhz" digits.
- Programmable display offset to account for offset between VFO and operating frequency.
- Programmable slope, normal and inverted. Allows use with "reverse" tuning VFO's.
- Programmable 100 hz digit blanking. This is useful when the C5 is used to display the operating frequency of equipment used for AM or FM reception where VFO stability is not as tight as with CW, SSB and various data modes.
- Programmable automatic blanking. When enabled this feature substantially reduces power consumption by blanking the display after the frequency reading stabilizes for a period of approximately 10 seconds. The display will be automatically enabled when the displayed frequency changes +/- 2 counts or when any operator input changes.
- Direct frequency input line allowing display of actual frequency with full resolution, bypassing offset, slope and 100 hz blanking.
- Support for sixteen unique stored programs, each having fully programmable display offset, slope, 100 hz blanking and automatic display blanking. Stored programs are contained in a low cost EEPROM.
- Full CMOS technology. The C5 operates over the range of 3.0 to 6.0 volts, 0 to 70 degrees C. Five volt operation is recommended for most applications.
