C7 Advanced Frequency Controller
NOTICE: Radio Adventures is currently in the process of moving its manufacturing facilities to a new location. Therefore we are not able to accept new orders until probably late October. We appreciate your interest in our products and apologize for any inconvenience. Introduction
The Radio Adventures Corp. C7 advanced frequency controller is a high-performance, low-cost CMOS part developed for the amateur and commercial communications markets. More specifically, it is designed to be the controller of a frequency locked loop, providing the frequency counter, correction pulses, control logic, two VFOs, and internal diagnostic software. The C7 also provides interfaces for a four-digit seven-segment LED display, serial memory, shaft encoder, key in, key out, receiver incremental tuning (RIT), and a 4 by 4 keypad. With all of these features built into one low-cost 28 pin DIP, the C7 is ideally suited for many applications in both the amateur and commercial markets. The C7s high level of integration makes it simple to add a full suite of digital features to voltage controlled variable frequency oscillators.
The C7 covers the frequency range from DC to over 50 MHz with an update rate of 10 times per second. When used with an external EEPROM, the C7 offers 32 digital memories and a programmable display capable of accommodating almost any mixing scheme including inverse tuning, offsets, binary multipliers, and binary dividers. This allows the display to make sense even when the measured frequency is different than the operating frequency. The C7 is useful in the construction of stable analog function generators, QRP rigs, home built radio equipment, and commercial radios. It can also be used as a stand alone module providing a "digital home station", for up to sixteen different voltage tuned rigs!
Features
- DC to 50 MHz frequency range.
- Drives four digit common cathode LED display to 100 Hz resolution. Toggles between kHz and MHz display when the "MHz" button is depressed.
- Powerful built-in diagnostics. These test modes make it easy to setup, monitor, and optimize the control loop.
- Logic level correction pulses. When coupled with an integrator, an external RC time constant controls the response time of the loop. This eliminates the need for complex programming and application specific systems.
- No spurious signal generation, unlike DDS and PLL systems with similar tuning resolution.
- Rapid transitions between widely spaced frequencies.
- Ten updates per second provide near real time tuning response.
- Long term frequency stability to +/-10 Hz.
- No "last digit jitter" effect.
- Programmable display offset to account for offsets between the VFO and operating frequency.
- Programmable display slope, normal and inverted. Allows use with "reverse" tuning VFOs.
- Programmable display multiplier/divider for increasing/decreasing resolution.
- Restores the last condition of the working registers VFO A, VFO B, and RIT for both VFO A & B on power up.
- "Continuous" rate adjustment shaft encoder interface provides more than 100 different tuning rates with seamless automatic switching for a smooth feel, great resolution, and incredible bandwidth.
- Provision for low cost contacting type shaft encoders as well as high resolution optical encoders.
- Full CMOS technology. The C7 operates over the range of 3.0 to 6.0 volts, 0 to 70 degrees C. Five volt operation is recommended for most applications.
- Supports full RIT for both VFO A and VFO B.
- Automatic or manual RIT arming is selectable, allowing the loop to unlock when the RIT pot is turned or when the ARM button is depressed.
